“I’d like to give Jackson a better childhood than mine. All I want for my son is to be around good people and having the help from CatholicCare is amazing.” – Dale

An abusive past made Dale and Sharen determined to change the future for their unborn child.

Sharen was significantly affected by violent relationships, with only one of her children allowed to live with her. After an abusive childhood, Dale had turned to drugs and alcohol to numb the pain. When they met six years ago, they knew they had been given a chance to build a new life.

Through CatholicCare, Dale and Sharen participated in family support and positive parenting programs. After five years of trying to fall pregnant, their prayers for a baby of their own were finally answered.

“Because of their history with domestic violence, Sharen and Dale wanted to make sure they had the best support and could do everything possible to ensure their baby was kept in their care,” says Natalie Jacobi, CatholicCare’s Project Elizabeth and Family Support Caseworker and Social Worker.

To prepare for the birth of Jackson, born six weeks premature, they were helped by Project Elizabeth, a pregnancy-related counselling and support service for women and their families. Thanks to the care and support they found through CatholicCare, Sharen and Dale are building strong, loving relationships and are looking forward to a life of hope and joy with their new baby, Jackson.

This Christmas, it is more important than ever for us to be united in demonstrating God’s unconditional love and keep families together.

Advent and the celebration of the birth of Jesus, our saviour, is an important time for us to remember the example He set for us during His time on Earth. Wherever He went, Jesus was always welcoming, willing to help anyone who came to Him, without judgement.

After this extraordinary year, where we have been asked to go outside the normal, I believe it is our duty to actively reach out to the most vulnerable and show this compassionate face of Christ to all.

CatholicCare helps the people who come to us to rekindle the hope that is in them. In the words of Pope Benedict XVI, “The one who hopes has been granted the gift of a new life” (Spe Salvi, 2).

Your compassionate gift will enable CatholicCare’s Project Elizabeth pregnancy support service to help vulnerable families in their efforts to give their children a positive start in life. Your kindness can help give people like Sharen and Dale the emotional and practical support they need to live their lives in love and joy. Thank you for your gift and prayers.
